According to the 2023 Online Grocery Shopping Report from Chicory, a New York-based digital commerce platform for CPG and grocery, Walmart emerged as the most popular online grocery among consumers, outpacing Amazon in the process, WinsightGroceryBusiness reported. The report, which was released on Thursday, surveyed nearly 1,000 e-grocery customers to gather information about their shopping preferences. While Walmart topped the list of online grocery retailers, Amazon still had a strong presence, with two of its banners ranking among the top ten: Amazon Fresh came in at a second place, and Whole Foods Market placed tenth.
“Walmart Grocery received the most votes from respondents as their preferred retailer for online grocery shopping, making it the most popular option out of a group of 20,” Chicory said in the report. “The retailer was joined up at the top by other large players, like Kroger and Albertsons. However, smaller players such as Aldi also fared well, suggesting that a strong digital experience can go a long way with consumers.”
Chicory, a company that focuses on contextual advertising and shoppable recipe services, reported that data from its recipe retail network indicated Walmart’s leadership in the online grocery space. The survey revealed that 72.2 percent of the consumers polled have made online grocery purchases in the past three months. Among those, 55.6 percent reside in suburban areas, while 25.1 percent live in urban areas and 18.8 percent are in rural regions.
According to the survey conducted by Chicory, 56 percent of the respondents reported ordering groceries online more frequently compared to a year ago. The survey also showed the frequency of online grocery purchases, with 40 percent of the consumers buying groceries online on a weekly basis, 30 percent doing so monthly, and 19 percent making these purchases every few months. On the other hand, only 5 percent of consumers said they order groceries online on a daily basis, while 6 percent reported rarely making such purchases.
A recent study revealed that the majority of consumers, 81 percent, are inclined to make repeated purchases from their previous online orders. Additionally, a significant portion of e-grocery shoppers, 51 percent, are willing to purchase items outside of the platform, such as through recipes or food content found on the internet.

With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in the world of technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles as well, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. Motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot and maybe I’ll make a film sometime in the future.
