The company is closing eight high-tech Amazon Go stores across the country despite a spokesperson stating that the company will continue to open new stores.
According to Amazon’s announcement, eight of its Amazon Go locations will close in the coming weeks, including two in New York City. The company clarified that the only affected locations were those with a minimal impact on customers. It has been reported that the closures include the store at Maiden Lane and Pearl, as well as the store on Park Ave South in New York City, as well as two stores in Seattle and four in San Francisco. It has been reported that the Seattle stores have been temporarily closed for some time, and now that they have been permanently closed, they will have a small impact on Amazon’s customers in the local area.
However, despite recent closures, Amazon continues to open stores around the country, including the new Puyallup location. In addition, Amazon Go stores and Amazon Operations sites, such as fulfillment centers, are currently working to identify other job opportunities within the company. On April 1, Amazon Go stores will cease operation, but regular operations will continue thereafter.
A second phase of Amazon’s new headquarters construction has been halted as a result of Amazon closing the building. According to Zach Goldsztejn, an Amazon spokesperson, the halt in construction is not indicative of the recent reports of Amazon’s mass layoffs globally. According to him, the pause occurred as a result of phase one being completed, which enabled the company to hire an additional 8,000 local employees.
