According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is planning to significantly increase its same-day delivery capabilities. This news follows Target’s announcement last week that it would invest $100 million in six new sortation hubs by 2026 to offer faster delivery. Amazon has opened 45 “same-day site” warehouses over the past four years, and this number could potentially exceed 150 in the coming years. These facilities are presently situated close to major U.S. cities, with new locations established in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. Amazon’s same-day delivery is currently available near these markets for orders totaling $25 or more, with a $2.99 surcharge for smaller orders.
An Amazon spokeswoman told the Journal, “We’re always exploring ways to bring our customers new levels of convenience and delivery options that work best for them. Same-Day Delivery is one of the latest innovations.”
The e-tailer had earlier stated it is looking to increase delivery fees for orders if those are required to be delivered faster, like say same-day deliveries. The company however stated increasing delivery fees would be a last resort and that it would explore all other options before it finally approves increasing prices. The company has been desperately searching for options to cut losses incurred when delivering orders, what with same-day deliveries often proving to be more costly than otherwise.
